Imaginez vivre dans une communaut\u00e9 isol\u00e9e \u00e0 flanc de montagne en Afrique avec des chemins de terre rarement entretenus. Imaginez ce que ce serait d'\u00eatre enceinte de neuf mois pour la premi\u00e8re fois, en vous inqui\u00e9tant de la possibilit\u00e9 de complications. S\u2019il y avait des probl\u00e8mes avec la livraison, comment feriez-vous pour descendre la montagne jusqu\u2019au centre de sant\u00e9 le plus proche ?<\/p>\n
C\u2019est ce \u00e0 quoi Patience \u00e9tait confront\u00e9e d\u00e9but d\u00e9cembre 2016. S\u00e9par\u00e9e de son mari, elle se sentait seule, craignant tout ce qui pourrait mal tourner.<\/p>\n

In remote villages like hers all over Africa and Asia, women who develop complications during labour often die either at home or on their way to the nearest hospital. Until recently, if a woman in Patience\u2019s village ran into problems, the local traditional \u201cambulance\u201d system was put into play. This involved four men and a stretcher that would carry the woman down the mountain to the nearest health center, twelve kilometres away. The terrain is rough and steep. If it is raining, the way becomes very slippery. If one of the men slipped and fell it could mean that the woman in labor could be dumped out of the stretcher onto the hard ground.<\/p>\n
Heureusement pour Patience et ses voisins, un nouveau centre de sant\u00e9 a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9cemment construit, beaucoup plus proche de son village. Aujourd'hui, la plupart des femmes enceintes n'essaient pas d'accoucher \u00e0 la maison, elles se rendent simplement directement au nouveau centre de sant\u00e9 d\u00e8s les premiers signes du travail.<\/p>\n
Le 9 d\u00e9cembre, Patience a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 accoucher vers minuit. Ne voulant pas essayer de marcher jusqu'au nouveau centre de sant\u00e9 dans le noir, elle a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d'attendre le matin et d'esp\u00e9rer que tout ira pour le mieux. \u00c0 l'aube, elle a rassembl\u00e9 son courage et a fait le voyage d'une heure jusqu'au nouvel \u00e9tablissement. En arrivant enfin aux urgences, Patience se d\u00e9tendit un peu, pensant qu'elle \u00e9tait en s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Malheureusement, en l'examinant, les infirmi\u00e8res ont d\u00e9termin\u00e9 que le b\u00e9b\u00e9 \u00e9tait trop gros pour que sa petite forme puisse accoucher naturellement. Elle aurait besoin d'un accouchement par c\u00e9sarienne et le centre de sant\u00e9 ne disposait pas du mat\u00e9riel n\u00e9cessaire. Elle a d\u00fb \u00eatre transf\u00e9r\u00e9e en bas de la montagne vers un autre centre de sant\u00e9. Les pens\u00e9es de l'horrible descente de la montagne en civi\u00e8re envahirent son esprit et la peur la rattrapa \u00e0 nouveau.<\/p>\n

What Patience did not know is that just a couple of weeks earlier, ADRA Canada had donated an ambulance to her community and it was parked just outside the health center, ready to take her where she needed to go. When she got down the mountain to the other health center, the staff on duty determined\u00a0that she needed to go to the nearest hospital another 30 kilometres away. Fortunately, the ADRA Ambulance was still close. Patience was rapidly taken to the hospital in town where she had the surgery she needed, delivering a beautiful baby girl she has named Elissa.<\/p>\n
As she finished up her story, she said, \u201cI want to give a special thanks to ADRA and the people of Canada who have given us this ambulance. If it had not been here and ready to take me into the city hospital I most likely would have died!\u201d<\/p>\n
This ambulance was provided by ADRA Canada as part of the maternal\u00a0and child health programs that we are implementing in Rwanda in partnership with the government of Canada.<\/p>\n
