“Through EMBRACE, we learned a lot about the connection between
96 sanitation and health. We learned that we should wash our hands before 97
we eat and before we take care of the children. We learned that we should
drink clean water, either from a water filter or by boiling it.
We also learned a lot about human waste, how it impacts our health, and
how to protect ourselves and our environment. There are 126 households
in the village, and before the project only 28 of them had a latrine. I used to
Maricho, use my parents’ latrine. My children would often just go in the backyard.
Now everyone here has a latrine. This is directly because of ADRA. If the
Philippines project participants attended all the trainings, then ADRA contributed the
construction materials and labour costs of a latrine. The project members
had to contribute the excavation of the hole for the septic tank, the roof,
and the door.
Before the project, people would just go wherever they wanted, especially
the children. But now we’ve all been taught the importance of using a
latrine and how to use it. Even the children now know. Since we’ve
received the latrines, our environment is cleaner. There are no reasons for
insects to be on our food. I think the children are much healthier, too.”
