In the face of massive displacement, destruction, and despair in the wake of Cyclone Michaung in India, supporters of ADRA Canada’s Emergency Program have made the challenge of survival more comfortable and humane. Thanks to our generous supporters, over 2000 people now know they are not facing their storms alone.

Cyclone Michaung struck communities in the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu regions of India in December of 2023. Nearly 4 million people from almost 200 villages were displaced due to heavy rain, strong winds, and widespread flooding. Over 200 millimeters of rainfall caused extensive flooding, damaging thousands of acres of crops and leading to power outages lasting for more than 30 hours in some areas. A significant portion of the affected were daily wage earners, workers who depended on daily work to provide for their families.

With flooded villages and cities, the lack of clean water became an immediate concern, significantly increasing health risks. Basic services were disrupted, leaving the affected people without access to basic necessities like food, hygiene products, and shelter. Losing their homes and their chance of income added to the struggle for safety and warmth.

With more than 200 relief camps accommodating over 15,000 evacuees, they needed support. ADRA Canada’s supporters enabled us to conduct rapid needs assessments in the affected areas to identify the most urgent needs of the affected families. The immediate emergency relief included dry food rations for almost 740 households, hygiene kits, and debris-cleaning materials for more than 2,700 people living in temporary shelters.

ADRA supporters like you have enabled us to continue helping those in need in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to rebuild and recover from this disaster. Together, we are all making a real difference for survivors.
