Stronger Families

In many of the societies in which EMBRACE worked, gender roles in the household and
community were clearly defined. There were strong opinions on what was men’s work and
what was women’s work. Women had much less say in their household and community
affairs. These divisions limited individuals, families, and communities from achieving their
full potential.

Through EMBRACE’s gender sensitivity trainings, husbands and wives learned that by
working together as a team toward the goal of healthy, happy, secure families, they could have
a much greater return for their efforts. Women learned to speak up, and men learned to
listen. Men learned to cook, wash clothes, and take care of children. Women learned to help

130 their husbands in their livelihood. 131
The trainings also addressed women’s rights and gender-based violence. They taught that
women have the right to protection, the right to life, and the right to property, among others.
They also educated women and men on the different types of abuse. In particular, the
trainings informed women and girls of where they could seek help if they became victims of
gender-based violence.
