“EMBRACE is now building what they call ‘Halfway
Homes.’ It is a place where mothers who are about to
deliver can go and stay about one week before their
delivery date. The expectant mother can go with a
husband or mother and stay in the EMBRACE home until
she goes into labour. The home is located very close to
the birthing clinic and this will make it easy for women
to have safe deliveries at a well-equipped birthing
facility, rather than here in the village, or worse, at sea
on the way to the clinic! What can happen here in
Sumaoy is that the ocean can be so rough when a woman
goes into labour that it simply is not safe to try and make
the trip, and there is nothing left to do but have the baby
in the village. If there are complications during delivery,
there are just no resources here to deal with that. Now,
with the ‘Halfway Home,’ women about to deliver can
choose a calm day to make the trip.”
