“I would say that about 50% of people who attend EMBRACE
have changed their behaviour towards their children.
Before, people would beat their children. Whatever went
wrong, they would just beat their children. But since the
EMBRACE program, the violence seems to have decreased.
There have also been lessons on gender like male and
female responsibilities and roles. We learned not to use
harsh words but to use gentleness and softness when talking
to each other. We learned not to use violence between
spouses or on the children. Don’t come home cursing and
beating because you didn’t earn a lot of income. We all are
going out to earn an income and sometimes you just can’t.
So don’t speak harshly. I think the difference in the family is
that the husband, when coming home from work and sees
the wife cooking or cleaning or looking after the children,
he helps out by drawing water or doing other things to help.
I’ve noticed that the relationships between husbands and
wives has really improved.
140 There is a men’s group here and my husband joins often. 141
When he comes back from the meetings, he doesn’t tell me
what he learned. But he puts it into practice.
I think it’s good to have EMBRACE here. Before, whenever I
walked around I saw people having violence. But now it
seems reduced. I think it’s great that EMBRACE came and
educated people here.”
