Introduction

Climate Resilient and Equitable Food Systems to End Global Hunger

Food insecurity is an ever-present and growing global challenge. Internationally, there are
currently an estimated 811 million hungry people, representing 8.9 percent of the world’s
population. Millions more are teetering on the edge of food insecurity, with an estimated 2
billion people in the world without access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food in 2019. If
current trends continue, the number of people affected by hunger will surpass 840 million by
2030, or 9.8 percent of the global population. 1

Children are particularly vulnerable. In 2020, 149.2 million children under the age of 5 (22
percent) globally were stunted. Further, 45.4 million children, or 13.6 percent, were affected
by wasting, a condition caused by limited nutrient intake and infection.
                                                                                          2

Projections now show the world is not on track to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2,
Zero Hunger, by 2030. In order to do so, 3 million undernourished people will need to be
                                 3
lifted out of hunger every month until the end of 2030.

ADRA Canada is doing its part to improve food systems through a synergized humanitarian-
development nexus strategy. Through the provision of emergency food assistance followed
by increasing agriculture and livelihood opportunities, ADRA Canada is combatting
growing trends of global food insecurity.

ADRA is strengthening its sustainable climate-smart regenerative and conservation
agricultural and land-use practices. We work to support the livelihoods of women and men,
with particular emphasis to vulnerable groups. These include female-headed households,
single women, persons with disabilities, etc. We are also providing training reflective of the
local context, existing knowledge, resource base, market potential and prospects of
        sustainability.

Despite the previous statistics, ADRA Canada, as a recognized member of the global
humanitarian community, is making a difference as the following stories demonstrate.
