From Dependency to Self-Sufficiency

                                                                                                          Kenya

Mama Abdia Mahat Galo is a 60-year-old mother of seven. She lives in Mandera West, a
drought-ridden region in the north-eastern part of Kenya, Africa.

In the ten years as an ADRA project participant, she and her family have experienced
remarkable changes. Instead of depending on relief food during the increasingly regular
drought seasons, she is now reaping large harvests and improving her income in the driest
        months of the year.

Abdia is one of hundreds who received training through the Rehabilitating Agriculture and
        Rangeland Ecosystems (RARE) project.

“ I knew nothing about vegetable production and consumption before the project started.
However, after receiving the training I have been able to produce vegetables enough for my
household use and sell the surplus. I bought four goats from the vegetables sales. They have
increased to 20 over the years. From my eight-acre fodder plot, I have been able to get money
from the sale of grass fodder enough for my son’s fees at the university. I am grateful that we can
now produce and sell grass to our pastoral community without overdependence on hay from
        other parts of the country.

Thank you ADRA and partners for this project. I can never turn back, and the sky is my limit!”
