Hurricane Beryl Strikes Early and Hard
In early July, Hurricane Beryl hit the Caribbean as a powerful Category 5 storm. This is the strongest storm this early in over 100 years. With winds up to 269 km/h (167 mph) and gusts reaching 324 km/h (201 mph), Beryl caused massive destruction.
Impact of Hurricane Beryl:
- Lives Lost: Three people died in Grenada and Carriacou, three in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, three in Venezuela, and two in Jamaica.
- Damage: Homes destroyed, power outages, and thousands displaced.
- Evacuations: Over 40 shelters in Grenada house about 2,400 people. In St. Vincent, 58 shelters hold 1,032 evacuees.
