In Orono, ON (just north of ADRA Canada’s office), the Migrant Worker Ministry (MWM) works to support migrant workers involved in Canada’s seasonal agricultural workforce. ADRA Canada recently supported MWM by providing care packages in backpacks for some of the migrant workers.

Our National Program Senior Manager, Ray Fankhauser, explains:

“Migrant workers form the backbone of the seasonal agricultural workforce putting fresh and healthy produce on our collective tables. It is typically a challenging and lonely existence for the workers as they put in long hours and have limited support for their physical, mental and spiritual well-being. To alleviate these challenges and provide an expanded support network to this amazing group, ADRA Canada and MWM have taken our partnership to another level.”

This year’s new Migrant Worker Care Backpack Project aims to provide 200 backpacks filled with hygiene essentials which are otherwise difficult to obtain for new arrivals in Canada who have limited mobility and means. On April 20th, a team of mostly youth from the Bowmanville Seventh-day Adventist Church helped to assemble the contents of each backpack to be distributed.

The first distribution took place at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church in Orono, and the second was at Pingle’s Farm on Taunton Rd in nearby Hampton, ON.

Your continued support for ADRA makes strategic local partnerships like this possible.
