Vuthy struggled in his role as a nurse. Though he had an associate degree in nursing, there were gaps in his skills and experience. These gaps impacted his ability to deliver quality care to the communities served by his rural clinic in Preah Vihear province in Cambodia. Unfortunately, the gaps were in critical areas of care, namely sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), gender awareness, and gender-based violence.
TOGETHER is Closing the Gap
When Vuthy learned of training sessions put on by the TOGETHER project, he enrolled to see what he could he learn.
Thanks to support from the Canadian Government and our donors’ contributions, TOGETHER is working in Cambodia, Kenya, the Philippines, and Uganda to ensure that the most vulnerable, especially girls and women, can exercise their health-related human rights. TOGETHER is multi-faceted in its approach to this goal. One approach is to empower healthcare providers to deliver the highest quality care possible.
Vuthy attended three training courses. They covered SRHR and gender topics; counseling for youth and victims of violence and abuse; nutrition counseling and migrant health policy guidelines.
The Transformational Power of Knowledge
Vuthy was transformed by these training courses. Now he delivers top-notch care, with a better understanding of his role as a nurse and the positive impact he can have on community health. Before, patients would avoid his services, opting to seek help elsewhere. Now, more and more patients are seeking hiscare. They feel comfortable with him, and confident in his services.
Vuthy applies his learnings to his work. In addition to providing friendlier services to all his patients, he ensures that patients in need of SRHR information and care receive what they need. He’s more attuned to gender equality issues. He also is better able to provide care for survivors of gender-based violence. Additionally, he advises migrants on SRHR and how they can protect their health and seek health services wherever they are.
“I’m thankful to the donor for supporting me with this opportunity to improve myself as a nurse,” shares Vuthy. “I hope there will be more trainings for nurses. I hope ADRA will continue to work with us in Preah Vihear.”
Together, we are empowering health workers and building healthier communities. Thank you for your support!
