It has been over a month since Manitoba declared a province-wide state of emergency. And still, the fires continue to burn.
Since late last week, the wildfire situation in northern Manitoba has taken a sudden and dramatic turn for the worse after a period of relative calm. As of the last few days, more than 25 new fires have been reported every 24 hours, largely caused by lightning strikes.
What began as a troubling start to the season has now become one of Manitoba’s worst wildfire seasons in recent memory. More than 21,000 people were displaced in June alone, with entire towns facing repeat evacuations—none more urgently than Lynn Lake, a northern community now under its second evacuation order of the year.
Meanwhile, in Saskatchewan, the situation is equally alarming. This year, 329 wildfires have already been recorded, which is well above the average. Currently, five communities are under evacuation orders, including Bear Creek, Beauval, and the La Plonge Reserve.
ADRA is actively working in close partnership with local leaders to provide urgent support, focusing on material donations and community-based service initiatives that bring relief to evacuees where they need it most.
You can be part of this response. Your generosity helps deliver life-changing support—food, supplies, and safety—to communities who need it urgently.
As ADRA continues to monitor and assess opportunities for response, we also continue to ask for prayers. For Lynn Lake, for Beauval, for all the indigenous communities now scattered from their homes. For the first responders who walk into the flames so that others may walk out. And for the wisdom to not only react—but prepare, change, and stand in Christ-like compassion.
Because once again, Canada is far from cold.
And our hearts must be anything but.
