For many families in Yellowknife, the rising cost of groceries can make putting healthy food on the table a challenge. The support of generous donations has helped the Community Planter Box Project in cultivating more than just vegetables – it’s growing hope and resilience in our community.

Amy, a local resident, discovered the project through a friend. She eagerly embraced the opportunity to grow her own food and provide healthy food for her family. The Community Planter Box Project provides a family with everything they need to get started: a planter box, seeds, tools, and even individual pots for her children to start their own little gardens.

With two pots, plenty of tomato seeds and stickers to decorate, Amy’s children were thrilled to plant and take care of their own plants. In her own planter box, Amy cultivated kale and, for the first time, zucchini. Soon enough, homegrown kale and zucchini in their meals became a regular addition, bringing fresh flavours and vital nutrients to the table.

The impact of the project reaches far beyond the dinner plates. Amy’s garden became a special place for family connection. Amy cherishes the time spent working alongside her children, teaching them about the importance of growing food and creating lasting memories together.

Inspired by her success, Amy is already planning for the next season by taking steps to protect her planter box by staining the wood – a testament to her commitment and the project’s lasting impact.

Donations like yours have not only provided families like Amy’s, with access to fresh food but have also empowered them to cultivate self-sufficiency, strengthen family bonds, and build a healthier, more resilient community. Thank you for making this incredible growth possible.
