As an ADRA supporter, you have been part of the ADRA network’s immediate response to the ravages of Hurricane Otis in Mexico.

Hurricane Otis struck the coast of Mexico on October 25, 2023. Within only 12 hours, it intensified from a Category 1 to a Category 5 storm, catching people off guard. Acapulco city and Guerrero State witnessed the strongest hurricane ever on the Pacific coast in the Americas. With 100 people reported dead or missing, 279,000 homes damaged, and 120 hospitals and clinics battered by the storm, the true toll of this ongoing emergency is yet to be fully comprehended. At present, about 1.5 million people are affected, and almost as many require humanitarian assistance.

ADRA quickly assessed and addressed a significant problem: the hurricane had damaged crucial infrastructure, effectively knocking out central communication systems. ADRA Mexico has so far helped connect 6,183 families to free satellite internet – which has helped to restore and reconnect families affected or separated by the storm. Multi-purpose cash assistance has also been provided so far to 430 households in the form of prepaid cards, and the network is planning to expand that cash assistance to a two-month period, aiming at helping 1,500 households. Through ADRA Canada, you have put your money towards this emergency response, and are helping families in the affected Mexican communities to recover from the effects of Otis.

This is a very current situation, so we will keep you updated as more information becomes available regarding how you are contributing to the early and ongoing recovery phases of ADRA’s response.
