The people of Hinatuan, a tight-knit community off the coast of the province of Davao in the Philippines, felt the world shake in December of 2023. A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the village, causing widespread damage, displacing thousands of families and destroying homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
With more than 7,000 aftershocks reported in the days that followed, Hinatuan’s community was devastatingly impacted and witnessing the destruction had a profound impact on the mental and physical well-being of many survivors. Providing support and resources to help the community navigate this crisis was essential.
Together with the generosity of donors, humanitarian organizations and government agencies, essential aid was provided to the affected communities. Food assistance, medical supplies, shelter, and psychological support were distributed to more than 180,000 families, impacting 722,968 individuals across 400 barangays in Surigao del Sur and nearby provinces.
