Fort McMurray Flood Response, ADRA Canada

A 25 kilometer long ice jam on the Athabaska River has brought more devastation to the residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Still recovering from the wildfires of 2016, reeling from the current crash of the oil industry, coping with COVID-19 closures and job losses, the people of Fort McMurry are now also dealing with flood waters that have covered the downtown area of the city. As many as 15,000 residents have had to leave their home under a mandatory evacuation order. Some of the evacuees have had to leave by boat.

ADRA Canada is working with the Alberta Conference, the Fort McMurray Seventh-day Adventist Church under the leadership of Pastor David Guzman, and the NGO Alliance of Alberta to provide relief to those affected by the flood.

ADRA Canada is monitoring the situation daily and has formed an emergency response working group. The Fort McMurray Seventh-day Adventist Church along with the support of volunteers from the Edmonton South Seventh-day Adventist Church, are providing essentials such as care kits, water, and counselling services.
