Irene, a mother of seven, has lived in the quiet coastal barangay of Topgown, in the Philippines, for over three decades. Her life, like many in her community, was once characterized by simplicity and reliance on traditional practices. Irene was the barangay secretary when she first heard about ADRA. The arrival of the TOGETHER project brought about significant changes, empowering Irene and her neighbours to grow a brighter future.

Irene, her husband, and their children, used to rely on fishing and farming as their primary sources of income. They faced financial challenges, particularly during emergencies, often resorting to borrowing from microfinance institutions or relatives. However, the introduction of BULSA (Barangay United Loan and Savings Associations), has revolutionized their financial practices and empowered them with a newfound sense of independence as they can now grow their own savings and can support themselves to a greater extent.

Through BULSA, Irene and her neighbors have learned the importance of saving and have developed a sense of financial responsibility. The group’s collective savings have not only provided a safety net for emergencies but have also generated interest, which is distributed among members. This innovative approach has empowered the community to take control of their financial future.

In addition to financial empowerment, ADRA’s programs have also fostered sustainable agricultural practices. Irene and her neighbours have been trained in kitchen gardening techniques, enabling them to grow their own fresh produce. This has not only improved their diet but also reduced their reliance on market-bought vegetables, leading to significant cost savings.

Irene’s story is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the transformative impact of the TOGETHER Project. By providing opportunities for education, financial empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods, generous donations have helped to build a brighter future for communities like Topgown and for families like Irene’s.
