Your support of ADRA has been felt in the east African nation of Tanzania. Shortly before the new year, Tanzania experienced torrential rainfall, especially in the country’s Hanang district. Initial reports counted over 900 homes completely destroyed, with another 400 partially damaged by the flooding and more at risk of damage from further landslides and flash flooding. National authorities quickly declared a state of emergency.
Thanks to the support of regular ADRA donors, ADRA was able to respond quickly. ADRA Tanzania promptly provided 240 households with food assistance – consisting of 4.8 tons of rice, 4.8 tons of maize, and 4.8 tons of beans. This is a perfect example of ADRA’s reputation for rapid crisis response, and it is thanks to donors like you who regularly give to our agency that we can maintain this level of efficiency across the global organization. It is also worth acknowledging the important contributions of local Seventh-day Adventist Church member volunteers in Tanzania who contributed significantly to the initial emergency response and needs assessment teams.
The situation in Tanzania has also seen ADRA working directly alongside other NGOs and in cooperation with the Tanzanian government. District commissioners in Shinyanga and Kahama have contributed 460 bags of cement for repair work. The government of Tanzania barred funeral expenses for families that lost loved ones in the flooding and committed to covering medical expenses for the injured and housing for the displaced. ADRA has gathered vital information from both the government’s sources and from interacting with people on the ground. The most pressing ongoing needs were for food, sanitation and hygiene items, school materials for children, construction, and medicine. ADRA continues to work on this crisis with your support, and with the combined strength of other important stakeholders.
We thank you for helping us to maintain strong local relationships with leaders and organizations worldwide, enabling us to uphold our reputation for fast, effective emergency response.
