One year ago, communities across Northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan faced one of the most devastating wildfire seasons in recent Canadian history. Families were displaced, homes were destroyed, and entire communities were forced to navigate unimaginable loss and uncertainty. Throughout the crisis, ADRA Canada responded through its National Emergency Management Plan (NEMP), providing emergency assistance to families facing urgent needs.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, ADRA Canada was able to distribute emergency cash assistance to iver 70 families impacted by the fires. These funds helped cover essential expenses including food, medicine, baby supplies, temporary housing, and transportation costs during evacuation and recovery.

In Marcel Colomb First Nation, Manitoba, ADRA worked alongside community leadership to support vulnerable households facing displacement and significant land-based losses. Councillor Amanda Castel shared, “The families were very happy with the extra funds from your donations to buy more food, baby items and all so it’s very expensive in store prices as well up here in the north. They were very happy when I gave them the donation in person. Thanks again.”

Even months after the fires, the emotional impact remains profound. One beneficiary from Denare Beach, Lisa, wrote: “I don’t know if I am capable of coming out with the right words of gratitude at this moment. The surprise of this support brought me just about to tears… This surprise has definitely helped lift my spirit in having faith that good will come along this path I was put on.”

Stories like Lisa’s are a reminder that emergency response is about more than immediate relief. It is about restoring dignity, hope, and stability during moments of deep crisis.

To every donor who gave in response to the 2025 wildfires: thank you. Your generosity provided practical relief during an incredibly painful time. More importantly, it reminded families facing loss that they were not forgotten.

As communities continue the long journey of rebuilding, your support continues to make a lasting difference.
